Meet Denise Kelly
I started out as a Southern California girl born in Hollywood but couldn’t be farther from that today. I love Northern California and have made Chico my home for almost 30 years. I came here to pursue a degree and teaching credential and have never left since. My Southern California roots probably started my love for all things growing. I went on to pursue a Floral Design certificate, began doing home decor and design professionally then began working as a landscape manager for a business park. My real dream was to own a nursery. I love to create spaces that encourage people to be creative themselves or that offers them refuge in some way. When I heard that my favorite nursery had sold (which I had never imagined it would), I approached the new owner at some point and told her if she ever thought of selling to please call me. One and a half years later she called me…
Tell us about your business.
I have been a flower floozie since birth and love creating a place that allows me to do what I love…be around great people and in a garden setting all day! Chico has been my hometown for almost 30 years and I love everything about Chico and everything that can be grown here. The Plant Barn has been in existence for that same amount of time.
I fell in love with the Plant Barn years ago and dreamed of owning it and making it even more unique. I am the third owner of the Plant Barn and with the help of my wonderful family, friends and staff I have been able to pursue that dream and keep dreaming of even bigger things. The aquisition of the back acre in 2012 means we are going to REALLY GROW! Our specialties include design, specialty containers, garden art, rental plants, and helpful staff.
It’s music to my ears when people tell us “this is their happy place”, or “We love coming here and seeing what is new, you always make us smile”. The Plant Barn has fast become a destination for many.We will continue to become the place you have to see. I especially love when we get compared to Hubbards which was a Chico fixture for many years. It was one of my favorite places to peruse. We are that local place you want to bring your friends and family to see…and I love that!
