Meet Aidee Flores Orejel
My name is Aidee, I was born in Tijuana, Baja California. Sociopolitcal issues caused enough concerns that my parents decided to leave all of our extended family behind and we migrated to Durham California. Eeeewwww. No Brown People at the time. My parents were both farm workers in Butte County. I saw how hard they worked for very little pay which motivated me to pursue College. I went to Chico State and received a B.A. in Sociology.
I have always felt blessed and thankful to all the opportunities available to me here in the U.S.A. but I felt shame to be Mexican and not know much about my birth country and my heritage so I chose to study abroad to complete my B.A. in Spanish as well as a B.A. in Latin American Studies.
At the time the only study abroad programs available were in Spain or Chile so I applied to Pontificia Universidad Catolica in Santiago, Chile and lived there for a year. Because I saw how my family struggled in many aspects of life do to language barrier I chose to utilize my bilingual skills to help families in need of social/community services. I’ve worked at Family Resource Centers, at Catalyst, at Migrant Head Start, Rosedale, participated in Child Abuse Prevention Programs and Events, worked with Foster Families and facilitated family reunifications.
My goal has always been to empower families to advocate for themselves, to educate themselves on all the great community services and link them to professionals that can assist them in areas they seem to be struggling in. It’s all about the Family. Family is so important and all families face challenges. Currently I work at a Law Office and I am studying to be a court interpreter so that I can continue helping people but this time in the California Court System.
Since I’m big on community I have always loaned my person to local art because I know how difficult it is to start from the bottom. I realized that community support goes a long way and it’s an awesome feeling to know that the little bit I did to help went towards something positive and creative.
I don’t consider myself a model, I’m just a face and a body that gets adorned with beautiful things made by amazingly talented ambitious individuals and who wouldn’t want to be a part of something like that? Maybe some of it will rub off on me! 🙂 If I can connect with the artist/designer/photographer and deliver their vision with my person, then I’m happy. Images are immortal. Art is immortal and since I’m IN the images I will be forever immortalized and that’s pretty damn cool.
What do you like to do for leisure?
When I’m not helping people, I’m dancing, yoga-ing, socializing, rollerblading, and beauty napping.
